Cowboys make Robert Saleh a priority after Mike McCarthy firing

Robert Saleh has a new opportunity this week as a new NFL head coaching job opens up.

The Cowboys plan to interview with the former Jets coach. According to NFL Networkwas his first request for an interview since parting ways with Mike McCarthy on Monday.

Dallas is the third team to request a head coaching interview from Saleh, following the Jaguars and Raiders.

Owner Jerry Jones is said to be on a “solo mission” to find the team's next coach after contract negotiations between McCarthy and the Cowboys broke down.

According to ESPN, the 82-year-old Jones has already had phone conversations with Deion Sanders about the role, and Jason Witten has also been mentioned as a potential replacement.

The 45-year-old previously served as the 49ers' defensive coordinator and the Jaguars' linebackers coach.

He has already interviewed with the Raiders and is considered the Jaguars' top choice.

If he doesn't get the head coaching role, it seems likely that he will end up returning to San Francisco as defensive coordinator.

Dallas is looking to grab headlines this offseason, taking higher-profile routes like acquiring a Super Bowl-winning veteran like Pete Carroll or attempting to trade for Mike Tomlin. It is also possible to aim for
