There is a saying that the shoemaker's kid doesn't wear shoes. However, my own experience creating estate and estate planning products after my father passed away over a decade ago has ensured that I practice what I preach.
I recently updated my estate plan because I know how important it is to formalize my wishes and information. Here's why you should update too. If you haven't updated it yet, please do so now.

It is important to draw up a will and, if possible, involve your family in the process. (St. Petersburg)
First, make sure you have an up-to-date will. This will ensure that your wishes are legally defined and will make the process easier for your loved ones. From being clear about what happens to your assets and personal belongings to who receives your loyalty points, being thoughtful in advance can minimize conflicts between family and friends while ensuring that your loved ones are on your way. We will help you carry out your wishes.
My suggestion is to involve your loved ones in the process if you have a family relationship that allows it. This allows your family to voice their concerns and thoughts while you are still alive and allows them to feel like they are part of the process. Additionally, some decisions can directly impact families, such as when family members wish to be buried close to each other and need to secure a burial site.
Or maybe some family members are comfortable playing certain roles, while others don't want to take on the responsibility. Having an honest conversation now, when emotions are not running high, can help resolve this issue.
There are online options to get a will quickly, and while it's certainly better than no will, it's best to consult an estate planning attorney who can clarify your state's rules regarding real estate. Your attorney may also be able to provide you with strategies and information about tax planning and efficiency. We also make sure you have the appropriate witnesses and notaries as required by your state.
My estate plan also includes powers of attorney for medical decisions and personal property decisions. A power of attorney gives someone the ability to make decisions for you if you are unable to make them yourself due to an accident or other mental incapacity.
In addition to deciding who will play the role, set the parameters for that person to follow. A health care power of attorney can include instructions regarding organ donation, burial and cremation, and other decisions regarding your health and final wishes.
Putting together a will and power of attorney is a great first step, but it doesn't cover all your wishes and information. Think carefully about your digital assets. What do you want your loved ones to have access to from your digital files? And what do you want no one to see? To a friend who may not know something happened to you? Want to leave a note on your social media account to alert you? This can be written directly into your will or laid out in a designated spot within your estate or will planning kit.
And put together this plan and related instructions so your loved one can find everything. It doesn't help if you have a will or power of attorney that no one can find. I I wrote it before Regarding Aretha Franklin's will story, the will was never found, but several different copies have since surfaced, including one found on her couch cushion. The ensuing legal battle took five years to resolve.

We want to make it easy for your loved ones to find your wishes, information, and documents. Consider building a complete legacy and hope planning kit like mine. future file A kit, or collection of similar kits, that includes all the information and physical items your loved one or executor needs to access in one place.
A copy of your will and power of attorney should be left here. If you don't want to physically include them in your kit, you can instead leave instructions on how to access them.

I hear from people that things like safe deposit box keys are often very difficult to find if they aren't organized in one place like in a legacy kit. In some cases, your loved one may not know how to contact an estate planning attorney, accountant, financial advisor, bank, or other key service provider. This information should also be included in your kit as part of your comprehensive estate plan.
A side benefit of having a kit is that in the event of an accident, natural disaster, or other emergency, you have one thing readily available.
How do you get started with estate planning and updates? Consider getting a kit like Future File to help you ask questions and think through your wishes. When prompted, submit that information to your estate planning attorney or other professional service provider to organize your legal documents. Finally, make sure your loved ones have access to the information you compile.

Even though I created the Estate Plan and Legacy Kit a while ago, things have changed and I felt very relieved after completing the update.
Don't procrastinate. As we are constantly reminded, no one knows what tomorrow will bring. Knowing it's being taken care of will give you peace of mind, save your loved one a lifetime of grief, and save you tons of time and money when you need it most.
