Border Patrol Agent Killed in Vermont near Canadian Border

A Swanton Area Border Patrol agent was shot and killed during a traffic stop 20 miles south of the Vermont-Canada border. One suspect was killed and another suspect was injured in the incident.

The Associated Press reports that FBI agents have uncovered a shooting that occurred along Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, on Monday. Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamin Huffman said the shooting of the Border Patrol agent was a “line of duty” death.

The still-unidentified Border Patrol agent conducted a traffic stop on the highway 32 miles from the Canada-Vermont border. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released by the FBI or the Border Patrol's parent agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and co-workers of the brothers in green who died in Vermont,” National Border Patrol Council officials said.

A CBP spokesperson issued the following statement:

Today, January 20th, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol's Swanton Sector was shot and killed in the line of duty. Border Patrol agents put themselves at risk every day to keep Americans and our country safe.

The FBI is investigating the incident but has not released any additional information.

It is unclear at this time whether the shooting is related to illegal immigration or human smuggling.

The Swanton area experienced a record-breaking number of migrant encounters under the Biden administration.
