King Charles privately congratulates Donald Trump on his inauguration, praises ‘special relationship’

King Charles III sent a personal message of congratulations to President Donald Trump on his inauguration, the palace has confirmed.

The 76-year-old monarch reflected on the “enduring special relationship between the UK and the US” in a handwritten letter to the 47th president.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that Prince Charles' private words were delivered to President Trump on Monday congratulating him on his second oath of office.

Mr Trump's plans for a state visit to the UK are currently not on the diary, but it is understood that it could still be planned for later this year.

Foreign politicians and monarchs are usually invited to the UK on advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with decisions made by the UK government.

It would not be surprising if President Trump chooses to visit the UK in the near future.

The 78-year-old president has a strong affinity for the British royal family and recently struck up a friendship with Prince William when he visited the newly reopened Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris last month.

President Trump previously said there was an “automatic chemistry” with the late Queen Elizabeth II, whom he met during his first term in the White House.

The king also praised Charles, calling him “a truly wonderful person.”

It remains to be seen, but King Charles and Queen Camilla may receive an invitation to Washington DC next year to attend the 250th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

This came just hours after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated President Trump.

“On behalf of the United Kingdom, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his election as the 47th President of the United States,” Starmer said. in a statement Monday.

“The special relationship between the UK and the US will continue to flourish for many years to come.”

in follow up statementThe British Prime Minister said the two men “discussed the need to deepen and invest in our transatlantic relationship”.

He added: “Due to President Trump's long-standing love and historic ties to the United Kingdom, our friendship remains deep.”
