DeSantis cites ‘Gulf of America’ in winter storm order after Trump rebranding

The same day President Donald Trump announced plans to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” a Republican followed suit by issuing a winter weather emergency order on Monday.

Announcement by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Executive Order 25-13 This is in response to a historic 1,500-mile-long weather system that brought rain and blizzard conditions east along the Gulf Coast and I-10.

“Meanwhile, a low pressure system moving across the U.S. Gulf of America will interact with arctic air and bring widespread impacting winter weather to northern Florida starting Tuesday, January 21, 2025…” DeSantis' order has begun.

“…Accordingly, I, Ron DeSantis…promulgate the following Executive Order, effective immediately…,” the order continues, listing a wide range of actions for state, local, and other authorities to take.

According to FOX Weather, total ice and snow amounts are expected to be “modest by Northern standards,” but “will likely result in paralyzing effects across the country.” [affected] Regions include Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.

His predecessor was also involved in the rebranding of numerous landmarks, primarily at U.S. military bases in Virginia and further south.

Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, named for General Robert E. Lee, became Fort Greg Adams. Fort Bragg, North Carolina, named after General Braxton Bragg, became Fort Liberty. Fort AP Hill in Bowling Green, Virginia, named for General Ambrose Powell Hill, became Fort Walker, and Fort Hood in El Paso, Texas, became Fort Cavazos.

These name changes come amid pressure from the political left to send in monuments and other memorabilia reminiscent of the Confederacy.

Trump changed the name of the continent's highest mountain, Denali in Talkeetna, Alaska, back to Mount McKinley, after fellow Republican President William McKinley. This was an unusual change that caused a stir for him.

In his executive order, President Trump said it is in the national interest to promote America's traditions and honor the contributions of “visionary and patriotic Americans.”

A representative for DeSantis declined to comment.
