A stranger punched and slashed a 39-year-old man in an unprovoked attack on a Brooklyn train early Monday morning, police and officials said.
Police said the victim was riding a Manhattan-bound D train on DeKalb Avenue around 2:45 a.m. when a man punched and slashed him in the chest.
Officials said the thug tried to talk to the straphanger before the attack, but the victim was unable to understand his ramblings.
Sources said the attacker fled the train immediately after the senseless attack, but the victim got off at the next stop, Grand Street in Manhattan, where she called 911.
The victim was taken to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
The suspect had not been captured by Tuesday morning.
The attack occurred on the eve of the New York Police Department's first extra police presence on a night subway train.
Gov. Cathy Hochul said the six-month effort will culminate in two officers each patrolling the city's 150 night trains, which run from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. .
