Trump may be ‘getting rid of FEMA,’ president says in visit to hurricane-hit North Carolina

President Trump suggested in a briefing with hurricane-hit residents in North Carolina that his administration might be able to “get rid of FEMA.”

“I recommend that FEMA go away, and I recommend that you pay directly,” Trump said. “We pay a percentage to the state. But the state should fix this.”

“FEMA has been a huge disappointment. They spend huge amounts of money. It's very bureaucratic and it's very slow,” he added before joking. “Other than that, we are very happy with them.”

“Some residents still don't have hot water, drinking water, things like that,” the president previously said of the devastation in western North Carolina nearly four months after Hurricane Helen.
