President Trump suggested on Sunday that the way to save the situation in Gaza is to “wipe it out.”
President Trump said on Air Force One that Gaza is “in real turmoil” after the Palestinian militant group Hamas' war with Israel. CNN reported.
President Trump has said he wants Gazans to be housed in Jordan and Egypt, which share a border. He also said he would talk to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi about the idea.
“You're talking about 1.5 million people. We're just going to wipe them all out,” Trump said, pointing to centuries of conflict in the region.
President Trump says 'something' has to happen because Gaza is now 'literally a site of destruction'
“Almost everything has been destroyed and people are dying there. So I'm going to work with some of the Arab countries and build housing somewhere else where I think they might be able to live in peace for a change,” Trump said. I want to,” he said.
He added that housing could be temporary or long-term.
Last week, ahead of President Trump's inauguration, a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was announced. The deal, negotiated by former President Joe Biden, ended months of fighting in the region that has destroyed much of Gaza and left starvation.
The deal is a three-part plan that Biden originally introduced last year. Part of that plan is the reconstruction of Gaza.
CNN noted that President Trump's comments appear to be a break with long-standing US foreign policy that has recognized a two-state solution between Palestine and Israel.
