Mennides' lawyer asked the judge to declare him in a prison for less than two years.

They claimed that he had already been greatly punished by JU's judge, and he resigned from a “global disgrace” and turned him into a “national punch line.”

The federal government argued that Menendez should declare a much harder penalty, given the “naked greed” to accept “BRI”.

They also pointed out the “rare gravity” of the case, given that Menendez was the first U.S. Senate, who was convicted of acting as an illegal foreign agent.
