Matt Nagy, Steve Spagnuolo praise Jets’ head coach process

NEW ORLEANS – The Jets will be able to see what they missed in Sunday's Super Bowl if the Chiefs play well.

The Jets interviewed both Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Najee and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo for the opening of the head coach. They eventually hired Aaron Glenn and although they have no regrets, they can see two candidate coaches in the big game.

“I was honored to be able to talk to Woody. [Johnson] Mike Tannenbaum and Rick [Spielman] And everyone in the interview,” Spagnuolo said. “It's not because it's a Zoom interview. That's a bit difficult. I'm a relational guy. I like being around, but I was so honored to have them ask and talk to me. It didn't work. I'm happy with Aaron Glenn. I think he'll do a great job. But I really admire the people there.”

Nezzy grew up in New Jersey, and this would have been a homecoming for him.

“It was a great opportunity,” Naggy said. “I was very grateful for that. It's close to family in New Jersey. It's one of those deals where you're going to get your name back into the mix and go back to that experience. So thankful to the jet for that. I'm doing it.”

Nagy and Spagnuolo were previously head coaches. Nagy led the Bears from 2018-21, making it 34-31 with two playoff appearances. Spagnuolo has been the Rams coach since 2009-11, and has become a miserable 10-38.

Both men want to get another shot in their head coaching gig. This time I thought the Jets might go with an experienced coach, but Glenn is his first head coach.

Nagy and Spagnuolo said the Jets' process was good and they appreciated the opportunity they spoke to them. They were preparing for the playoffs when they were interviewed, but that hindered them a bit.

“I firmly believe you owe all your efforts to those who are currently working,” Spagnuolo said. “If there's still a game to play, it's all focused on that. In the week I went through these interviews, we were preparing four possible enemies, and that's what's going on. But , I explained to everyone who spoke to it, look, I haven't dived deep into their soccer organization, but I will do so if I get a chance in the future. It didn't work that way . It has a lot of twists when you're still playing.”

Both said there was debate over quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but neither of them have any depth in the situation.

“It was a bit,” Naggy said. “It's fair only when you go through the process of wanting to be open and honest with them. Let's be authentic. You're like you, you're not there, what's going on in Kansas City so far? When you're entrenching, you really don't know what's going on. You'll have an opinion or something.

“Trust me, I know Aaron pretty well. I know what he did to us when I was in Chicago. I think he's quarterback hell. But. There's a lot going on, and it's the process itself, and I don't think it's really fair. … Coach Glenn goes through it and experiences where he wants to go, but Aaron Rodgers says. There is a lot of respect.”
