Egg shortages force some grocery stores to impose limits

Due to a lack of eggs, some retailers across the country have set limits on the number of cartons that customers can purchase at once.

Discount grocery store Lidl told a New York news outlet that eggs from certain brands sold in stores are limited to two dozen per customer.

“At this point, there are no limits to Lidl Us for specialist egg brands, including cage-free, free range and organic,” Lidl told News 12.

Some Massachusetts customers were subject to the two-carton limit as Reddit users shared it on their message board in late January.

Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board, told Fox News Digital that the egg shortage is likely to continue sporadically in the future, Emily Metz said.

The main perpetrator, she said, was the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

“Affordable food is important to everyone, and while farmers do everything they can to keep costs down, it's important to know that egg farmers are price-earners, not price makers. It's important,” she said.

Mets continues, “The volatility seen at egg prices reflects many factors, most of which are out of the control of egg farmers. Eggs are sold in the market as products such as corn and wheat, and are also used to make eggs. Wholesale prices are driven primarily by supply and demand.”

According to Metz, there is no treatment or vaccination for avian flu, and it is culled when the entire flock is detected.

“In the US, we have lost nearly 50 million spawning hens to bird flu over the past year and more than 14 million birds in the past four weeks,” she said.

Egg production is “complex and time sensitive,” said egg production.

“We can't predict the future, but what we know now is that our system is tense. HPAI remains a clear and existing risk to poultry herds.” She said.

“It will take a duration without additional HPAI detection on egg farms to stabilize supply.”

However, these shortages may not last very long in different parts of the country.

“We expect the shortage to be localized and short-lived.”

“The good news is that egg farmers have a lot of experience working together to move eggs where they need them most, and that's exactly what they're doing right now,” she said.

“We understand how frustrating it can be when eggs are not available on shopping trips, and the shortage is localized and short-lived as egg farmers work with retail customers to fill up those stocks. I expect that there will be.”

Eggs are frequently delivered to grocery stores, with empty cases being “frequently replenished with fresh eggs within 24 hours.”

“Egg farmers deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone in these very challenging situations,” Mets said.

“Keeping birds safe and healthy is a top priority for all egg farmers, working round the clock to protect them, restock their supplies and maintain those eggs.”
