President Trump on Sunday argued that if Canada joins the US, it was the biggest thing that Northern neighbors could do.
“I love Canadian people. We have a great relationship, but if they become our 51st state, it's going to be the biggest thing they can ever do. ” Trump told reporters. “And think of how beautiful the country is without its artificial line passing through it. Someone drew it with the ruler years ago.
Trump repeatedly reiterated his desire to see Canada become a part of the United States. This is something Canadian leaders repeatedly rejected as a possibility.
The president also aired in an interview with Fox News' Bret Baier that “something has to happen” and agreed to suspend the tariffs in Canada for at least a month. He said there will be more needs in the day.
He added: “I think Canada would be much better than the 51st state.”
“Because we lose $200 billion a year in Canada. And I'm not going to let that happen, that's too much. Why we basically pay $200 billion a year with subsidies to Canada. Is that? If they're in the 51st state, I don't mind doing it,” Trump said.
Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to suspend the 25% tariff before it came into effect last week. Canada agrees to secure its northern border and work to combat fentanyl flow to the US, implementing a $1.3 billion border plan, as well as other measures to secure its border. I agreed to take it.
The agreement with Canada reflected a similar deal Trump struck with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier that day.
