Colorado's Polis backs Trump's halt on penny production: 'Great move'

Colorado Gov. Jared Police (D) supported President Trump's direction on Monday, halting production of penny, calling it a “big move.”

On Sunday, Trump announced that the Treasury had requested that the penny be stopped production.

“For a long time, the US has been minting pennies and literally costs over two cents. This is a waste!” Trump said in his Truthful Social Post on Sunday.

Police said the movement is also environmentally friendly. In response Playing cards x on social platforms.

“There are major environmental benefits to not only saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, but eliminating pennies. This is a big move,” Police said.

In 2024, the 19th consecutive fiscal year was nearly 3.7 cents, and the 19th consecutive year was nearly 3.7 cents, according to the U.S. Mint annual report.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), also chased Penny in X last month.

“Pennies will cost more than three cents to produce and spend more than $179 million taxpayers in 2023. Mint produced more than 4.5 billion pennies in 2023, and for circulation It produced about 40% of the 11.4 billion coins to you. Penny (or 3 cents!) for your thoughts,” Doge said.

Pennies are made primarily of zinc and copper is made of copper. US Mint said in its annual report that it lost $85.3 million in nearly 3.2 billion penny it produced in 2024.

Former President Obama supported eliminating Penny, which dates back to 2013.

“This isn't going to be a huge savings for the government, but whenever people are spending more money on things they don't actually use, it's an example of what we probably should change,” Obama said. I said it at the time.

Police frowned upon when he came out as a candidate for Trump's Health and Human Services after the November election, with Robert F. Kennedy's qualifying support. Police faced blowbacks from Kennedy critics and other Democrats who raised concerns about the outspoken anti-vaxin activists who lead the US public health system.

“I grew up in a way that I try to look half-fully at the glass,” Police said in November when asked by CNN's Dana Bash about Kennedy's vaccine records.

A spokesman for the governor supported some of Kennedy's priorities on healthier food systems and said it would reduce environmental toxins.
