After devouring the film from an ugly defeat to the Celtics, Jalen Branson shows that the Knicks have at least improved improvements from a low bar in the season opener, with his team competing with reality champions I saw evidence that it can be done.
“We learned that if we were to fight, there's a chance,” Branson said Monday. “I don't think it was a game in Boston last time, so we had to give ourselves a chance. We're ready from the jump.”
The encouragement of the film session cited by both Branson and Tom Thibodeaux was the beginning of the third quarter when the Knicks went in a small lineup and cut a 14-point deficit to three in four minutes.
Hope was short-lived.
Boston responded with a 26-7 run. It included two sets of three foul shots after Jason Tatum and Derrick White attempted to Tories – and the Knicks were buried.
Following the biased contest that followed the elimination of Knik in October, Thibodeau's team was too far under the upper crust to consider coming out of the east.
As NBA analyst and former player Brian Scalabrin said, “If you're the Knicks, it's all crashing. You'll remember once again that you're not on the same level.”
But Branson seemed to recognize the right mistakes rather than clean them.
“We saw us start from the flat, and we saw us cut the big deficit into three, and when we were talking (Monday), it was obviously as a team – they “But when he took that timeout and then fouled the 3-point shooter, they went (run),” the point guard said. “The way you fought halfway through the game is how you play the whole game. I said this – no matter who you play, it's to see where you are. But with them It's another standard. They're champions, so there's obviously a lot of room for improvement. And we need to focus on that.”
Assessing how they stack up with the Celtics is not only were they opponents before Tuesday's match in Indiana, but it's likely that the road to the New York conference final will go through Boston It is also related to that.
The Knicks were demolished in both matchups this season against division opponents, but they felt better about being within strike distance late on Saturday without injured top defender OG Anunoby Ta.
“We cut to three in the third quarter with six minutes remaining, but there were some bad fouls giving points,” Thibodeau said. “It was a huge hit. You had to play 48 minutes against them.”
The lineup forged a failed comeback was one of the smallest developments deployed by Thibodeau this season. To boost the attack, he began the second half by replacing the valuable Achihua with Miles McBride.
It's rare for Tib to sacrifice size and rebound, but coaches said they need to find something more effective against the Celtics.
He settled on the senses of Branson, McBride, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart and Karl Anthony Towns. Thibodeau was unable to commit to the lineup against the Pacers until he learns Anunoby's status, which will not return until after the All-Star break, but is listed as suspicious on Tuesday with a sprained foot I stated.
Achiuwa has started with three DNPs from Anunonby so far.
“(The lineup with McBride) is more peripheral skills. (Those with Achiuwa) are bigger, rebound, defense. That's what it is,” Thibodeau said. “We were in such a big hole, and we had to change what we were doing.
“Whenever you do one thing, it's going to make you vulnerable in another field. So basically we have to play better. Not a certain guy. We were looking for something that would energize us and give us sparks, and that's where we went.”
Regardless of the lineup, the Knicks face different types of measuring sticks against the Pacers. This is the team that removed them from last season's playoffs.
And as they look back at the Celtics blowout, the small window of third quarter prosperity is enough to believe things will be better.
“We're focusing on bouncing, we're focusing on that massive scale,” Branson said. “It's not easy, but we just can't just stay on what happened. Obviously, we lost. We got kicked the asses. But then how did we move forward? Do we do that? We can't just sit there and feel sorry for ourselves.”
