The Wall Street Journal editorial board warns that President Trump has made similar mistakes in trade during his first term at the White House.
Focusing on Trump's orders that impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, the Journal said the president “has given a shock of another uncertainty to the economy.”
“His advisor says these tariffs are economically 'strategic', not negotiation tips for other targets. A strategy that harms US manufacturers and workers? ” asked the outlet.
“It's worth reconsidering the damages of that misstep, as he threatens to repeat it.” The newspaper wrotesays automakers, steel companies and wire companies were negatively affected by Trump's first term tariffs.
“This seeks the most bravest political rent, and benefits a few at the expense of many,” the journal wrote. “This is not important for Trump, who cannot change his dogmatic views on tariffs through evidence, but readers wanted to know the rest of the story.”
Monday's editorial is the latest in slus from a journal that knocked on the president and his policies on the trade, the economy and many other issues.
