PBS eliminates DEI after inquiry from Bari Weiss’ Free Press

PBS fired two diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) executives and subsequently scrapped the department Bari Weiss Online Publishing Free Press The broadcaster ignored President Donald Trump's executive order ignoring the elimination of controversial initiatives.

On Monday, PBS CEO Paula Carger told staff he was bidding farewell to Cecilia Loving, senior vice president of DEI, and Gina Leow, two executive directors of Dei.

In an email, Karger explained that starting January 20th, they will need to leave to comply with Trump's executive order.

“I know you will join me in hopes of them well in their future efforts,” Karger wrote.

She assures employees that the issue will be further discussed at the upcoming All Staff Meeting on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, PBS said it was free to give tips from senior network executives who claimed PBS had originally planned to settle affection and relocate it to the station service department in order to bypass the execution order. I was contacted by the press.

“PBS people are very obsessed with DEI,” a source told the freelance press.

“We were trying to get things moving to avoid executive orders rather than make the necessary adjustments to ensure the sustainability of our network.”

This post is being asked for comment from PBS.

According to the Free Press, the executive order was signed on the day Trump came into effect immediately and came into effect immediately, but waited until Monday to remove the DEI position.

Initially there was debate about placing two executives in the wellness department, but the plan shifted to moving to station services instead, sources said.

PBS's Station Services division manages communications between the National HQ in Arlington, Virginia and local affiliates.

However, with the executive order in effect, the network ultimately decided to completely eliminate the DEI office.

Jason Phelps, senior director of external communications at PBS, confirmed to the Free Press that affection and Leo had been let go just minutes before the announcement of Karger's email.

The federal fund accounts for about 15% of PBS's annual budget, translated into about $215 million, some of which come through businesses for public broadcasting.

The DEI division itself was founded in 2021, and Loving and Leow joined the organization's Spearhead Diversity initiative.

Loving earned nearly $400,000 in 2022, including bonuses, according to financial disclosures cited by Free Press. Leow's salary has not been revealed.

During her tenure, Affe introduced programs such as “Meditation Monday” and “Indigenous Healing Circles” to promote open dialogue and conflict resolution among PBS employees.

In an internal DEI presentation in 2023, these circles cultivated a “sense of trust, intimacy and safety” and added that such practices can support employee well-being and teamwork.

High Rank sources pointed out that loving often spoke in a way similar to sermons, using spiritual language to instill moral duties in her Day's work.

The presentation material encouraged PBS leaders to “oil” their employees and demonstrated their value to the organization.

As deputy commander of Loving, Leow was responsible for organizing the DEI Council, employee resource groups and restorative judicial practices.

The two also co-authored a book entitled “Connecting Surcile” and previously worked together at the DEI office at the New York City Fire Department before joining PBS.

PBS faces broader financial and political scrutiny from Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk.

In the Wall Street Journal, Op-Ed, Musk and former Doge co-head Vivek Ramaswamy highlighted public broadcasting as a potential target, with public broadcasting companies receiving more than $500 million in federal funds per year. I paid attention to the following.

Beyond budgetary concerns, legal issues have emerged regarding PBS employment practices.

In 2023, the network reported that 68% of programming focused on diversity, with almost half of new hires being “BIPOC.” This is an acronym for black people, indigenous people and people of color.

The network said three of the four new employees on board in 2023 were women. Some critics argue that such policies may violate anti-discrimination laws.

The 2024 layoff round left 24 employees unemployed and eliminated seven unfilled positions.

The White House says it is trying to strengthen the executive order's intentions and end “diversity, equity and inclusion discrimination” in federal agencies, contracts and spending. It also calls for oversight of DEI-related employment practices within private companies that receive government funding.

Kerger is scheduled to appear before the House Doge Committee in March and will be questioned about PBS's use of federal funds.

Committee Chairman Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Ga.) criticized PBS for what she described as politically leading programming and justified public television's ongoing taxpayer support. I requested it to be made.

It relies on a combination of federal funds, donations and grants to create programs such as “PBS Newshour”, “Nova”, and “Masterpiece.”
