LA Jolla, CA – On a February 4th radio show, former US Open Champion Lucas Glover called for a PGA Tour to Autlaw Aimpoint Puts, a green reading method that many players have adopted in recent years. This technique has been extremely controversial among players and fans, and many critics have given them a long time to complete. Of course, the slow pace of play was a topic of related debate in 2025.
Colin from Morakawa is one of the players employing Aimpoint Puting, and this method has “helped him by 1,000%.” So when asked about Glover's objection to Aimpoint, if that affects the pace of play, Morikawa playfully threw him under the bus.
“There's nothing against Lucas, but if you're banning AIMPOINT, you'll need to ban long putters,” Morikawa said.
After struggling with the greens most of the time on the tour, Glover switched to the long putter that has been well known in recent years. The Long putter helped him win twice in 2023 as he eventually won a trip to the Tour Championship. Also, back-to-back wins allowed him to maintain his PGA Tour card until 2025.
However, Morikawa felt that Glover's attitude towards Aimpoint was wrong, with the two major winners fiercely defending the practice.
“If you don't do it properly just like other players are reading a putt, AimPoint takes time if you're not doing it right. If you have a respect problem, then you'll need to be careful. I think. Some players may get a little too close to the hole. When someone else is putting it down, when you get too close to the hole, I think my lines and putts are the feet of someone else. And I don't want to cross the mark. But are you going to tell other players not to roam the hole when we're picking up putts?” Morikawa said.
“It gives me the basis for how I read a putt and how I start my own line. It's like reading something from behind a hole or behind a ball. AimPoint is right or wrong I don't think people understand what to say. Do they play slower? Some players may do it in the wrong place. And sometimes, look, I do it I admit, maybe I can't get in when I want, so it adds a few more seconds. But I know that, and I know that. Whether the player is slow or not I think you need to be careful, right? Do something about it so that you let someone know who's going slowly, right?”
