The two children reportedly were found dead on Monday in a car park in downtown Detroit.
The Detroit Police Department said the family pulled a van into the parking garage at a Hollywood Casino hotel in Greece Town around 1am Monday, and parked it on the ninth floor as the vehicle ran out of gas. Report By wxyz.
“They said they weren't sheltered and there were no housing to go to,” Detroit Police Captain Nathan Doda said.
Authorities said five children were sleeping in the van, adding that around noon the mother noticed one of the 9-year-old boys was not breathing. Michigan Hospital.
However, while they were in the hospital, the grandmother realized that another child, the two-year-old girl, was not breathing either. So my friend went back to the casino parking lot, and told the police he would get his second child back and take him to the hospital.
Both children were declared dead in hospital, Wxyz reported.
The cause of the child's death has not been confirmed yet, but police say they believe that both children will freeze and die.
“It's so sad. Especially as a father, I can't imagine what my family is feeling. I wish it didn't happen,” Duda said.
The other three children were tested and treated at the hospital and listed in stable condition on Monday afternoon, the outlet reported.
Interim Police Chief Todd Bettyson said he heard that his family was traveling from casino to casino, adding that he believes he has been living in the van for two to three months.
“My mother had a lot of pride from what I was told,” Bettison said. “She loved her kids and wanted to have her family together.”
On November 25th, the family contacted the Detroit homeless response team to let them know that they lived with another family but did not live there, and they needed another location, according to the Detroit Mayor. Mike Duggan said.
Duggan added that there was no solution as a result of the family having conversations and conversations with the city's homeless response team and no outreach workers were sent.
The mayor noted that outreach staff were being sent in an emergency but the family never called back. But Duggan also believes no one on the homeless response team has contacted their families to determine if their situation has been resolved.
In the meantime, Deputy Mayor Melia Howard has been instructed to conduct an investigation with Julie Schneider, director of the Housing and Revitalization Division (HRD) in Detroit, how this happened and never again would happen. Additionally, Detroit Director of Homeless Solutions Terra Lynsner said the city's shelter has beds available to residents who need it “to prevent this situation.”
The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) also roared, reminding the public that people in need can use shelters during the cold winter.
“We've had quite a few cold snaps, but that's very dangerous,” says Chiara Clayton, director of communications.
“We can't maintain that we're outside with these types of cold temperatures,” Clayton added. “That's why it's so important that people know they can get food, they can get a place on their heads and get warmer.”
Relief centres like these exist “around the city,” Duda said.
“There are so many resources available, and these resources bring families together,” the police captain added. “This wasn't necessary. It didn't have to happen like this.”
