National retailers warn of higher prices with reciprocal tariffs

The National Retail Federation (NRF) warns that higher prices will soon hit Americans as President Trump signs mutual tariffs of foreign trade partners.

“We support the President's efforts to reduce trade barriers and imbalances, but the scale of this intake is large and will seriously destroy the supply chain.” said in a statement.

“It will likely lead to higher prices to make American families hard work and erode household expenditure,” he continued. “We encourage the President to seek coordination and cooperation with his trading partner partners, bringing stability to his supply chain and family budgets.”

On Thursday, Trump signed the president's memorandum and proposed mutual tariffs that he said would crack down on unfair or discriminatory tariffs from both his overseas allies and his enemies.

Customs duties are customized for each country based on five different areas. Unfair costs to American businesses and consumers from tariffs imposed on US products, unfair taxes imposed, policies in different countries, exchange rates, and other practices considered by the office of trade representatives.

Trump signs the memorandum of understanding means that he will begin a review process to allow his administration to set mutual tariffs.

Under the memo, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US trade candidate Jamieson Greer consulted with Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and Homeland Security Secretary Christie Nom to report on the tariffs they would like to place in each country. You are instructed to submit.

In the NRF release, French noted that consumers are concerned about economic wars.

“The University of Michigan's monthly consumer sentiment index continues to decline, suggesting that consumers are wary of the uncertainty of the trade war,” France said.

Several Democrats have criticised Trump's tariff plans, claiming that it would increase the daily costs of Americans and plunge the US into a trade war with their enemies.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board has denounced Trump, calling it “the most ridiculous in history” and calling it a potential trade war “the most ridiculous in history.”
