Elon Musk said that if Sam Altman stops plans to convert it into a for-profit, he will withdraw his $97.4 billion bid for Openai's nonprofit, according to a recent court application.
CNBC Report Elon Musk, along with his artificial intelligence company Xai and a consortium of investors, has offered to withdraw a $97.4 billion bid for Openai's nonprofit. However, there are conditions for this offer. Openai must stop converting into commercial entities and maintain non-commercial status. The court filing filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, “Openai, Inc.'s board of directors will maintain the charity's mission and sign “off for sale” asset signs If ready to stipulate, by halting conversion, the mask will withdraw the bid. ”
The bid, which began Monday, accused Openai and its CEO Sam Altman of abandoning the company's original mission to develop AI forever and instead pursue profits. Musk, who claims to have helped launch an AI research company in 2015 and donated $50 million, has resigned from the company's board of directors in 2018, and has since become a for-profit company. He expresses his dissatisfaction with the transition.
Altman rejected Musk's offer and told CNBC the move was an effort by Musk to “slow down its competitors.” First established as a nonprofit in 2015, Openai was later converted to a “cap profit” model in 2019. Openai's converts supporters to fully-profit public benefits companies claim this will allow the company to expand and attract investors.
Musk spoke at the World Government Summit in Dubai via video link on Thursday, reiterating concerns about Openai moving away from its nonprofit roots. He said, “This is… I found a nonprofit for preserving Amazon rainforests, but then… I think… it's like turning into a timber company instead, cutting down the trees and selling them for the wood. Musk suggested that Openai should change its name to “Max Profit AI” or “Closed for greedy profits.”
The battle between Musk and Open-I has sparked a fierce debate over the role of AI companies and the balance between the pursuit of AI with the interests. As the situation continues to unfold, the technology world awaits the consequences of this high-stake conflict between the two most influential figures in the AI industry.
A court filing revealed that the mask offer is subject to Openai, which maintains its non-profit status and mission. If the company is moving forward with plans to become a fully for-profit organization, Musk argues that “charities must be compensated by what the charity pays for its assets.”
