The controversial Ivanpa solar power generation system in California's Mohab Desert is expected to close 14 years early despite President Barack Obama's $1.6 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy.
The Ivanpah facility works using a mirror that concentrates sunlight in a central boiling tower, heating the water to move the turbine. It has been criticized for incinerating birds and other animals within the reflection zone.

Ivanpah has become a familiar sight, allowing miles of its blind light to be seen on the road between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and on the airspace above.
