In October 1994, when Smith was 22, she saw Michael and Alexander tie Michael and Alexander into the back seat of the car and roll the car to John D. Lake in Union County.
Tommy Pope, a former Union County Prosecutor who is now representative of South Carolina, previously told Fox News Digital that Smith had an extramarital relationship at the time with the son of a wealthy local business owner.

Smith's lover, who wrote a letter a week before the murder, told his then 22-year-old mother that he was not suited to raising children while he was romantically interested. Birmingham News reported Interview from 2005.
