The Washington NFL franchise has played home games in Maryland for the past 28 seasons. The commander calls Northwest Stadium, the home of former FedEx Field.
The stadium opened in time for the 1997 season and is located about 13 miles from the US Capitol in nearby Washington, DC.
It replaced RFK Stadium. However, the outdoor venue, where the commander had welcomed opposing teams for nearly 30 years, has quickly deteriorated, prompting discussions on the final alternative.

Earlier this week, Mayor DC Muriel Bowser met with residents living near the aging RFK Stadium site to discuss the possibility of building a state-of-the-art stadium that can host Washington commanders. Bowser has long supported the push to bring the football team back to the District of Columbia.
“I firmly believe that in cities around the world, a world class city like us, we are doing a big thing,” Bowser told residents. “We have arts and culture, entertainment, nightlife and sports. We have a great neighborhood and we can invite the world to our city. But modern stadiums are Until there is, we can't host events. The world is used to it.”

The proposal estimates that the new stadium could cover 25 acres of 174 acres. A mixed-use development featuring homes, restaurants and parks could potentially cover the rest of the land.
The city recently ruled the land around and around years with federal lawmakers. In December, the US Senate passed a bipartisan resolution to move land from the federal government to DC.
“This is a victory for DC, our region and America.” Bowser wrote on her social media accounts after news of approval surfaced. “Everyone loves a good comeback story – that's the story of DC. #ourrfk.”

The bill was signed into law in January by President Joe Biden. The move, although some hurdles remained, was seen as a major step towards commander returning to the country's capital.
On Thursday, Bowser highlighted the importance of building world-class stadiums if the city wanted to be a viable host for concerts, the Super Bowl and other major sporting events.

“Until we have a modern stadium, we cannot host events like the world, such as the World Cup, which includes the Super Bowl.
The mayor says she is committed to working with the commander as she aims to make sure that building a stadium within city limits in the franchise is the best alternative. Ta. Bowser also vowed to reach the terms of stadium trading that are beneficial to those living in the community.
Commander's principal, Josh Harris, has not made a public declaration of the stadium location of his favourite, but the team could potentially play in DC, Maryland or nearby Virginia. I admitted.

The use of public funds to help fund multi-billion dollar stadium projects often encounter pushbacks. Bowser and City lawmakers could face strong headwinds as they insist on constituents about the potential allocation of public dollars to stadium projects.
At one point in the roughly 20-minute presentation on Thursday, Bowser referenced a sports study that commissioned estimated economic benefits of over $1 billion. The revenue comes from mixed-use developments along with modern NFL stadiums. This development could also create thousands of jobs.
Bowser stopped sharing details about the amount of public funds she was happy with with the team she was using. She instead said that her administration's “detailed analysis” determined that NFL stadiums would be a strong investment.

Apart from hosting NFL teams, RFK Stadium was home to two MLB teams, two college football teams and several professional soccer clubs. The stadium was also the location of several World Cup matches.
On the field, the commander made a major shift in 2024. Harris chose Dan Quinn as the team's next coach, and Adam Peters was brought in to handle the duties of general manager. The commander selected quarterback Jayden Daniels in the April NFL Draft.
Daniels earned the offensive Rookie of the Year honors, bringing Washington to the NFC Championship Game.
