Woman loses both hands in shark attack in Turks and Caicos after photo fail

Canadian tourists had their hands amputated after being attacked by a shark while snorkelling on vacation in Turkey and Caicos when they tried to take a photo with the creature.

The incident took place on February 7th. Turks and officials with the Caicos Environmental Resources Department (DECR) said the 55-year-old woman was snorkeling from Providenciales, the main island of the archipelago. Shark.

Officials said the shark is estimated to be about six feet long. However, the species have not been identified yet.

The investigation revealed that the woman “took to engage with the animals from the shallow waters to take a photo.”

The woman's horrifying husband quickly rushed into the water, trying to keep the shark away from his wife. New Zealand Herald reported.

Other horrifying bystanders also jumped in to help the woman and try to stop the bleeding.

She was rushed to a local hospital and later jumped off the island for further medical care, officials said.

Beaches in the area were closed “with abundance of caution,” but later reopened Sunday, officials said.

“This reduction would urge the public to be aware of your surroundings, follow local recommendations and respect marine life,” the official said in a statement on its Facebook page.

“Swim in designated areas, avoid dark water, do not swim alone, and do not attempt to feed marine wildlife under any circumstances.”

Between 2021 and 2025, four people were attacked by sharks and all victims reportedly survived those attacks, according to the website of the Visit Turks and Caicos Island.

The website reported that one of the incidents occurred on May 23, 2024. This was when a male resident was snorkeling at Leeward Reef off the northeast coast of Providencial when he was attacked by a shark. As a result of the attack, authorities said the man had to amputate his leg into his lap.

The attack occurs when another shark attack is reported on the same day that two American tourists were attacked by a shark a few hours after arriving at a popular beach resort in the Bahamas .

Authorities say tourists were attacked by what looked like a bull shark and one woman was seriously injured while swimming in the waters of Bimini Bay.

The incident remains under investigation, and both women are expected to recover in full.
