Wichita, Kansas (KWCH) – The IRS is one of the federal agencies where probation employees who were fired as part of a workforce cut are expected to be fired.
This could mean thousands of workers will leave when we are in tax season. Local tax filers said this likely won't affect most tax filers.
Shane Albrecht, general manager of Pawnee's Liberty Tax, said that if you submit files electronically, there is a high chance that you will not see any impact. According to IRS data, the majority of Americans file their individual tax returns online.
Albrecht said that is what the IRS likes, and that it is primarily an automated review process and not touched by humans.
“They really wanted to streamline it as much as possible. They can send almost every form electronically. There are very few forms that are paper alone. That's something the IRS has been working on for over a decade, and they We've reached a point where we can submit everything electronically,” he said.
Albrecht said the IRS should confirm returns and refunds if they qualify within 21 business days.
He added that some of the returns submitted electronically were randomly cited and reviewed to ensure that the system was functioning properly.
“These are things that are handled manually, so they look at them and make sure the system is working the way they are, and make sure they are handling the way they are. One in ten people will be kicked out. They will take a little longer. They do not fall for 21 business days, but you are just a bad luck in a draw,” Albrecht said.
He said that if you submit on paper they need to be reviewed by hand and that there is at least a minimum wait of 6 weeks for the process.
The IRS has increased its staff numbers in recent years with additional funding, but it is unclear how many people fall into probation status.
Albrecht recommends avoiding and filing paper applications when you have all the documents to accomplish it.
On the Kansas side, he said there were no reported issues.
