President Trump said Wednesday that the federal government should “take over governance” in Washington, D.C.
“I think we should govern the Columbia area,” Trump told reporters on Air Force 1. “I think we should do it strongly, do it in law and order, and absolutely perfect.”
Trump praised the district's police department and said he would do something “great” with Mayor Muriel Bowser, who met with Trump after the 2024 election. Still, he pointed to the crime and homeless population, contrary to the city's circumstances.
“The federal government should take over DC governance and do that really, really well,” Trump said. “And I like the mayor, I get along with the mayor, they don't do their job – too many crimes, too many graffiti, too many tents on the grass, and some spectacular lawns There is a tent. It's sad, it's sad, it's sad. There are homeless people all over.
“But when they come to see me in Washington, DC, we can't have it. Just as Macron is coming, the British Prime Minister comes, and all these people come to see me. “I'll do that,” he continued. “In the end, there's President XI. There's everyone… You can't let that happen.”
The district is governed by a council of elected representatives and mayors. a Law of 1973 It provides for the Council to review all laws passed by the DC Council before it becomes law. The President will also appoint district judges.
Trump has clashed with Bowser in the past, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic and racial justice protests that rocked the district in 2020. He repeatedly criticised the emergence of cities, suggesting that it is inadequately reflected in the country's capital.
Washington Post It was reported last week The White House has prepared executive orders to increase penalties and enforcement for violent and petty crimes in the district, clarify homeless encampments and remove graffiti.
