Democrat New York Governor Kathy Hochul is currently engaged in a tug of war with the Trump administration over the new casualties imposed on New York City drivers.
The issue relates to a central business district traffic program designed for drivers entering Manhattan under 60th Avenue. Tolls charge $9 for passenger cars, $14.40 for light trucks, $21.60 for heavy trucks, $4.50 for motorcycles, $0.75 for taxis, $1.50 for Uber and Lyft drivers.
“You can either pay $9 to enter the congestion pricing zone or ride a subway where violent crime is rising. At least some drivers fear they will ride the subway and the overall congestion pricing is You can undermine your purpose” Union Local 106.
“It's heinous and disgusting to put in traffic pricing right now. … Give me a break.”
Republican President Donald Trump also seemed worried about the casualties of crowds, even before it was implemented last month. “Crowded pricing is not a good situation,” Trump said recently. “They treat New York people very badly.”
Early reports show that tolls have dropped 9% in area traffic, but Trump argued that the decline in traffic actually harms local businesses and residents.
“The traffic is reduced because people aren't coming,” Trump said, riding in Air Force 1. FOX 5 NY. “If people don't come, that means the whole place will be a disaster. That means they're not going to spend money in New York.”
“All Americans should have access to New York City regardless of their financial means. It should not be reserved for a small number of elites.”
On Wednesday, Transport Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter to Hochul announcing that the Federal Highways Agency had ended its approval of the CBDTP, which had just been approved by the federal government in November.
Duffy described the “backwards and inequities” and “face-to-face slaps” of surrounding states like New York and New Jersey and Connecticut.
“Commers using the expressway system to enter New York City are already funding the construction and improvement of these highways through payment of gas taxes and other taxes. Transport rather than highways From people who work to pay the system,” Duffy said. statement.
“All Americans should have access to New York City regardless of their financial means. That should not be reserved for a small number of people.”
The letter appears to have infuriated Hochur, who quickly arranged a press conference at Grand Central Terminal.
“I don't care if you like or dislike traffic pricing or dislike it. This is an attack on our sovereign identity, our independence from Washington. And we are the nation's state It's the country.” I cried out.
“This is what we fought, this is what people like Alexander Hamilton and others fought.
Hochul's Histrionics continued. As we are now fighting for our residents, our drivers, our emergency services,
“New York says he has not worked under the King for over 250 years,” she saw. “I'm sure hell isn't going to start now.”
As she spoke, Hochul held a copy of Time Magazine and had a rather flattering image of a Trump wearing a crown decorated on the cover.
Without tolls, traffic would surge into the area again, she warned. “The next time you get caught in a traffic jam, you know who's going to be responsible.”
For now, Hochul insisted that the camera would stay there.
The Metropolitan Transportation Agency has already filed a lawsuit and is challenging Duffy's decision. The MTA will not “turn off tolls” while the litigation process unfolds, Chair Janno Lieber confirmed.
