McConnell, the longest serving leader in Upper Chamber history, announced Thursday.
McConnell has been in the US Senate since 1985, but was first elected in 1984.
The Kentucky native will serve seven terms before retiring in January 2027.
He also previously resigned as Republican Congress leader after last year's 2024 election.
“On seven times, my fellow Kentuckians sent me to the Senate,” McConnell said in a prepared statement on the Senate floor. “Every day in the meantime I am humbled by the trust they have placed on me to do their business here. It was a once-in-a-lifetime honor to represent our Federation. I am. I will not seek this honor for the eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.”
Previously, he initially stated that he would serve the remainder of his term until January 2027.
The McConnell announcement comes after multiple health scares and scares after being frozen during a briefing in the press.
McConnell had a violent fall during GOP lunch in December. And then, even worse, while leaving the Senate Chamber of Commerce earlier this month, he collapsed again and agreed to be taken in a wheelchair.
After adding three justice to give President Donald Trump's first administration a conservative majority, he leaves behind a legacy of radically changing the composition of the U.S. Supreme Court. Furthermore, he prevented former President Barack Obama from appointing Merrick Garland.
But McConnell and Trump's relationship hit a wall in 2020 after opposing the president's “equipped” election claim. Since then, McConnell has voted against the majority of Trump candidates at the start of his second term.
“One of the most underrated talents in life is knowing that one day it will be time to move on to the next chapter of life,” he said in his floor remarks at the time. “So I'm standing before you today… to say this will be my last term as Republican leader in the Senate.”
