Sheinbaum warns US cannot 'invade' Mexico in fight against cartels

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded strongly to a State Department order that declared some of the country's drug cartels to be terrorist organizations, saying Elon Musk is “qualified for a drone strike.”

“This cannot be an opportunity for the United States to invade our sovereignty,” Sinbaum told reporters. Mexicoit is collaboration and coordination, never subordination or interventionism, and even less invasion.

“Under any circumstances, Mexicans will not accept any foreign intervention, invasion or other actions that are harmful to the integrity, independence or sovereignty of the country… [including] Violation of Mexican territory by land, sea and air. ”

Tren de Aragua, Mala Salbatrucha (MS-13), Cartel de Sinaloa, Cartel de Giralisco Nueva Generación, Cartelles Unidos, Cartel del Noreste, Cartel del Golfo, La Nueva • Familia Misioacana were all listed as terrorist groups in the State Department's release on Wednesday.

Unlike other organisations listed, Mexican authorities argue that the label is unfair because cartels are motivated by profits rather than politics.

Shanebaum, Mexico's first female president, has approved the US demand for drone surveillance, but said he will not allow any kind of attacks within sovereign boundaries.

She said this was a joint effort to curb the flow of drug sales across borders, instead of President Trump postponing a 25% tariff on Mexican imports.

The Mexican president has also pledged to impose stricter policies on criminals engaged in arms trafficking through constitutional reform.
