Gov. Kathy Hawtle (D-NY) said on Sunday that Democrat governors should not sit back and sit daze while the Trump administration attacks their rights.
Margaret Brennan: We're now looking at a clash with Trump's Democratic governor. Joining us right now from Albany, New York is Governor Kathy Hochul, Good morning, Governor.
government. Kathy Hockle: Good morning.
Margaret Brennan: I know you were just here in Washington, and you met President Trump personally. In the past, you said that the relationship doesn't have to be hostile. Was your encounter with him hostile? And what was your biggest message?
government. Hochul: It was a hostile conference, but especially after I found out that the Trump administration had ended its congested priced program by officially elected members of our Congress, who represent the voices of the people. was very clear. And in a tweet he claims he has the power to destroy it because he claims he is the king. And we worked under the King 250 years ago, so I had problems with its characterization and, as I said, we have not returned there. So I wanted him to take my case directly to him and have him see the benefits of this program. Because our city was paralyzed by the gridlock and we were able to move the city again and on the path for it to work. I just wanted to have the opportunity to share it, but I don't know we're very persuasive in that respect, but that's fine. People in my state need to know that I am going to fight wherever I am.
Margaret Brennan: Audience, to explain for the busy price, you're talking about this $9 sacrifice that took on people driving to Lower Manhattan under 60th Avenue. Your fellow Democrat, Phil Murphy of New Jersey, said he didn't like the policy and actually asked President Trump to stop it. President Trump's office says this is discriminatory against working-class people. How do you respond to that?
government. Hochul: With respect to the state of New Jersey, we respond in this way. They don't tell us what to do in New York, and neither do Washington when it comes to policies we believe will reduce crowds. It travels along the vehicle, and emergency vehicles move faster. The air quality has improved. So, I have an important argument, but no one else should be able to guess us. I am the governor of New York. I will address the internal issues before me without interfering with New Jersey or in fact the federal government.
Margaret Brennan: So, this goes to court.
government. Hochul: Oh yeah, it goes to court and we believe we will win in court and this program will continue.
Margaret Brennan: You know, this isn't the only conflict between the state and the federal government, and the tension here knows you were in Washington with the other governors who met with the president this week. . The federal fund accounts for about 40% of the state's budget. President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funds from the governor in order to force him to comply with his agenda. This is what he said to the governor of Maine. Please listen.
[VO SOT]
President Donald Trump: Is Maine Governor of Maine?
Me Gov Janet Mills: Yeah, I'm here.
President Trump: Are you not going to follow that?
Me Gov Janet Mills: Comply with state and federal laws.
President Trump: Well, I-We're federal law. Well, you better do that. You better do that. Because if you don't, you're not going to get any federal funds at all.
Margaret Brennan: It was about trans athletes on the women's sports team. Are you planning on a Democratic governor starting to cooperate with this? Are there any legal pushbacks?
government. Hochul: What he does is explain that they are overflowing with the zone. As for the FEMA dollar, they are attacking California. They are filing a lawsuit in Illinois. They are following Maine about this and come after the program officially introduced in the state. To us. And when someone is overflowing the zone at a football game, all you need to have is that the defenders are not only very disciplined and smart, but also put themselves in their position. And that's exactly what the Governor of New York, the Governor of New York, does in collaboration with our Governor. We are not going to sit daze and attack our rights. When there is a common basis, we will work with you. There is no doubt about that. Build amazing projects and infrastructure. There is an area where we work with you to bring immigrants and violent criminals out of our streets. We don't dispute that, but don't think you just bully us and don't expect a response from the governor.
