Price cap on British energy bills to rise 6.4% in April, squeezing households – business live | Business

Introduction: Energy Price Caps Set Today

Good morning and welcome to our comprehensive coverage of our business, financial markets and the global economy.

The UK's cost of living could tighten households today if the energy bill rises again this spring.

ofgemthe energy regulator is expected to announce the latest price cap on costs in energy units at 7am, and analysts expect the cap to rise due to recent rises in wholesale gas and electricity prices.

consulting Cornwall Insight We calculate the data and estimate that the quarterly cap will increase by 5%. This increases the typical annual household energy bill from around £85 to £1,823 per year. It currently costs £1,738 per year.

The government is concerned about the risk of an increase in energy bills.

Last week, a Whitehall source told the Guardian he hopes the bills in England, Scotland and Wales will increase by around £9 a month over the next three months.

Thie urged Ed Miliband's energy secretary to write an urgent letter to Ofgem.

The Energy Price Cap sets the maximum value that a supplier can charge for an energy unit (There is no cap on how expensive your bill will be).
