According to an internal Pentagon memo, U.S. service members who are transgender or have gender discomfort are prohibited from serving in the military unless they receive a waiver.

“Gender discomfort is disqualified from military service members who have a current diagnosis or history or who have consistent symptoms,” the memo reads.

“Service members who have a history of sexual relocation or genital reconstruction surgery as a treatment for gender discomfort or treatment for transsexual change, or who have a history of sexual transition have been disqualified from military service,” the memo continues.
