INDIANAPOLIS – Jets coach Aaron Glen is here at the NFL Scouting Combine to get to know the players in this year's draft.
But there's one player here who I've known since the day Glenn was born. ClemsonSafetyRJ Mickens.
Mikens is Ray Mikens' son and played with Glenn and the Jets at Texas A&M.
The two former cornerbacks remained close, and now Mikens' son is projected as the third day pick in this year's draft.
Can he be the Jets and Glenn?
“It would be really cool to play for the jet. [my dad] RJ Mikens said Thursday. “The city is a great city, a great fan base and a great organization. It's really cool.”
Mickens said he hadn't met the team yet when he spoke with reporters Thursday, but if that were the case, Glenn doesn't need to dig a lot to get to know him.
“He's really a real guy,” Mikens said of Glenn. “He's a great role model, a great leader, a great guy. He's really special and I'm going to do great things there.
“It was very exciting to see him get that job. It's a big deal for him and his family. We grew up with their family. My dad obviously played with him, so it's just a great relationship.”
The Jets fans in the late '90s were stars in the defensive backfield with Glenn and Mickens under coach Bill Purcells and defensive coordinator Bill Belichick.
They said that young Mikens had never seen many of his father's game films.
“I don't watch many of his films, and it's a bit difficult to get it,” he joked.
Ray Mickens spent eight of the 10 NFL seasons with the Jets after taking him in the third round in 1996.
“My dad helped me so much,” RJ Mickens said. “Just just being a former DB, you know the way DBS thinks and give me a defensive schematic. Everything is huge and you can now use that resource whenever you want.”
