Transgender activists stormed the Iowa Capitol on Thursday as lawmakers considered a bill that would remove “gender identity” as a class protected from state civil rights laws.

The massive protest followed a week of “heavy debate” over the law called House File 583, according to the report. The law removes “gender identity,” a false concept that can identify or be a different gender than what was born, as a protected class under the Iowa Civil Rights Act. The hearing was the final opportunity to weigh the law, according to the report. The Republican Control House and Senate are expected to vote for the bill on Thursday and send it to Gov. Kim Reynold (R) desk for final approval.
“Trans rights activists will storm the Iowa State Capitol to consider a bill that removes gender identity as a protected class for lawmakers,” women's sports advocate Riley Gaines said in a post to X, accompanied by a video of transgender protesters. “You cannot protect both legal gender and gender identity as they are directly inconsistent with each other. Keep the Iowa GOP strong.”

House File 583 further requires an Iowa birth certificate to reflect the biological reality of a person's gender at birth, redefines “sex” and means “the condition of either male or female observed or clinically validated at birth.”
