Peter Laviolette changing Rangers’ power play units after Adam Fox injury

The loss of all-site players like Adam Fox will naturally affect the appearance of some parts of the Rangers game, but power play in particular can be uniquely affected.

Instead of replacing the Fox with another defender, head coach Peter Laviolet skated five forwards on Thursday in the Blues Shirt's first power play unit.

As JT Miller was sidelined for the day due to illness, the top group consisted of Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Chris Clayder, Vincent Trokek and Alexis Raffeniere.

“It happens,” Rabiolet said of the alignment. “There were a lot of teams that used five forwards before. We just look at it and see what it looks like. That's good. If we do that – I don't know if we're or not, but if it goes that way, Mika feels like she's someone who can read that position and read that place and manage it.”

Miller could replace either Lafrenier or Trokek with their first unit against the Maple Leafs on Friday.

Anyway, Laviolette sounded like he was comfortable unfolding his power play with every forward.

The second unit featured two defenders, K'Andre Miller and Zac Jones, along with Reilly Smith, Jonny Brodzinski and Will Cuylle.

Before the game on Thursday night, Rangers Power Play ranked 19th in the NHL with 21.1.

However, since January 1st, Bruce Heart has ranked 9th at 27.7%.

Miller, who suffered a lower body injury to the islanders, wore a red non-contact jersey during practice Thursday.

He also took his regular rep next to Will Borgen and showed that it might be a good idea to play against the Maple Leafs on Friday night.

Additionally, Kreider was a full participant in the practice after missing the past two games with a private upper body injury.

“I'm really happy about that [Miller] Rabiolet said. “Clyde, the same thing. I'll make these decisions tomorrow. It's great that those guys are there.”

Rangers' hits against the islanders were most seen in the game on March 9, 2021 in Pittsburgh (58). This season, he has recorded the NHL's fourth-highest hit total.

After Friday's match against the Maple Leafs, the Rangers practice at the MSG Training Center on Saturday, and will then continue their home stands against predators and islanders.
