It appears that Miles Garrett has added another wrinkle to his feud with the Browns.
Garrett, 29, told the Browns on Friday that he would not sign an extension with the team, according to multiple reports.
The star defensive end initially called for a deal from Cleveland last month, saying his goal simply wasn't alongside the Browns.
“When I talk to the management at the Browns, I don't feel that our future is in line with the victory we have now.” Garrett told ESPN “NFL Countdown” a few hours before Super Bowl LIX. “And that's what I look forward to at this stage of my career.”
However, Browns GM Andrew Berry recently insisted that the team had no plans to drive him away.
“Miles, like you guys told me, he's a big part of our organization, he's a really good guy and he's a great player,” Berry said. Talking to Cleveland.com. “I understand the demands and everything about trade, but our stance hasn't really changed. I can't imagine the best situation for the Browns to not have Miles as part of the organization.”
“I don't really touch on any conversations with other teams. Just paying respect,” Berry added. “I don't think it's suitable only for current and future businesses, but I'm not interested in Miles' trading so it has nothing to do with this situation.”
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has established that he agrees with Berry's feelings and plans to find success in the future.
“I want to win too,” Stephanski told Cleveland.com. “We want to win the championship as well. That's exactly how we wire and we're working very hard towards that goal.”
The Browns' No. 1 overall pick in 2017 spent all eight years of an NFL career with Cleveland, winning six NFL All-Pro selections in 2023.
Garrett previously said he was “not trying to rebuild” during the Browns' awful 3-14 season in December.
