It was possible to use PayPal Bill Pay (PPBP) to pay for American Express personal credit card bills for a while. Payments were limited to $1,000 each, but we were able to make multiple payments for the same card. In fact, I was able to pay back the entire invoice in a few days. Not only was this useful, it also allowed some people with debit cards earning rewards to earn something when they repay their Amex cards.
But it all appears to be over. Today, American Express sent a notification to customers who were using PPBP, informing them that payments via the service would not be possible as of 4/1/25.
what happened
- You cannot use PayPal Bill Pay to pay your American Express personal credit card statement from 4/1/25.
- Cardholder The ability to pay other merchants via PayPal using American Express card will not be affected
A simple idea
This will probably come as a surprise to a few people who actually used PPBP to pay AMEX bills. A few weeks ago, Amex appears to have added the ability to pay business cards as well as business cards, not just things that were impossible in the past. However, a few days later, not only did Amex customers lose the ability to add business cards to their PPBP accounts, they were also unable to add new personal cards.
Most people who already had personal cards in the system were able to continue paying them, but it seemed like it was only a matter of time before Amex pulled the plug across the business… and that's exactly what happened. RIP, ppbp. We miss you.
