National anthem wars: NY Rangers fans boo ‘O Canada’ as Maple Leafs visit MSG

The national anthem war between the United States and Canada is not over yet.

In the past, it was a faint, playful sport joke, but things have undergone a serious shift last month amidst political tensions between the two countries.

Starting on February 1st with a game for the Ottawa Senators, fans booed “Star Spangled Banner” on a visit to the Minnesota Wild. The next day, Toronto Raptors fans booed the national anthem when the Los Angeles Clippers came to town.

Booing reached new heights in the highly contested 4 Nations face-off tournament. Canada ultimately won the US, but the boos still rang out when the Toronto Maple Leafs visited Madison Square Garden on Friday night.

New York Rangers fans booed the singing of “O, Canada” before losing 3-2 to the team from the north.

Ironically, Team USA captain Orton Matthews was on the other side of the boo on Friday night, considering he is a Leafs superstar.

Wayne Gretzky's criticism by Canadians for support for Trump “broke his heart,” his wife says

The first boo came on the same day President Donald Trump signed his next executive order Additional 25% tariff Regarding 10% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and imports from China. Trump also said Canada could become the “51st state.” Canada's tariffs were ultimately postponed.

Prime Minister Justin Trudoux, who announced his imminent resignation after Canada defeated USA in the overtime thriller with the 4 Nations title, took the shot of his breakup in Trump.

“You can't take our country – and you can't take our game,” he posted to X.
