President Donald Trump made English the official language of the United States on Saturday in an executive order.
This move was highly anticipated – and may surprise those who assumed that English was not yet the official tongue.
Text Some of the orders are partially as follows:
Nationally designated languages are at the heart of a unified, cohesive society, with the United States being reinforced by citizens who are free to exchange ideas in one shared language.
Our policy of encouraging Japanese language learning and adoption when welcoming new Americans will make America a shared home and enable new citizens to achieve American dreams. Speaking English not only opens the door economically, but also helps newcomers engage with the community, participate in national traditions, and give back to our society. This order recognizes and celebrates the long tradition of multilingual American citizens who learned English and passed it to their children for future generations.
It is America's greatest concern that the federal government designates only one official language to promote unity, foster a shared American culture for all citizens, ensure consistency in government operations, and create a path to citizen engagement. Establishing English as an official language not only streamlines communication, it also strengthens shared national values and creates a more cohesive and efficient society.
Therefore, the order designates English as the official language of the United States.
This order allows government agencies to provide information in languages other than English. “The head of the agency does not need to modify, delete or suspend production of documents, products or other services prepared or provided in languages other than English.”
