Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said on Sunday on NBC's “Meet the Press” he would suggest that someone other than Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky should lead his country.
Host Kristen Welker said, “Let's start with Ukraine and its elliptical office meetings. The reaction continues to pour out, and you just heard me talk to House Speaker Mike Johnson. He left the door open because it could be that President Zelensky might need to resign to reach a wider peace agreement. Let's ask this question. Do you think President Zelensky needs to resign because there is a peace agreement?”
Sanders said, “I think that's a horrifying proposition. Zelensky leads a country that tries to protect democracy from Putin, an authoritarian dictator who invaded his country. I feel embarrassed that millions of Americans are embarrassed and that there is a US president who says Ukraine has started a war. He has exactly the back. The Ukrainian people have lost tens of thousands of soldiers. Their cities are bombed as we speak, and our job is to protect the 250-year tradition of us being the Democratic leaders of the world, not to turn our backs on a struggling country trying to do the right thing.”
