Commerce Secretary Howard Lutonic said tariffs in Mexico and Canada, which are expected to level this week, are “a liquid situation.”
Lutonic Participation Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures. He discussed President Trump's plan to place tariffs on Mexico and Canada to curb immigration and fentanyl flow to the United States.
The tariff plans were suspended for a month as the two countries agreed to take the US border, but Trump claims it will come into effect Tuesday.
“They did a lot,” Rutnick said on Sunday about Mexico and Canada's recent actions.
“So [Trump] It's like he's now thinking about how he wants to play it in Mexico and Canada, and that's a fluid situation. ”
For the first time, Lutnick showed that tariffs could differ from the original 25% that Trump proposed shortly after taking office.
“We're going to leave it for the president and his team to negotiate exactly what they are,” he said.
Last week, Trump confirmed that tariffs will be introduced in Mexico and Canada and said he would increase Chinese tariffs.
Trump was unclear as to whether the tariffs would take effect after delays.
“I think there will be tariffs in Mexico and Canada on Tuesday, and I'm going to leave it to the president for the decision to decide exactly what they will,” Lutnick repeated.
