The personal finance company recently set out to determine the most “sinful” state in 2025. The results show a mix of red and blue states.
In a study published on February 24, Wallethub wrote that Republicans and Democrats “want to point out one another as all the sources of wrong for the United States, but the truth is that each of the 50 states has their own virtues and evil.”
Analysts compared 54 key indicators of immoral behavior across all 50 states, including history of internet browsing, per capita violent crime, alcohol use, and gambling.
According to Wallethub, this is the list of the most sinful states.

Nevada's No. 1 spot is no surprise to most people, considering its reputation as Las Vegas' “Sin City.”
However, Wallethub said gambling and desire are not the only sin associated with the state, but also the gluttony.
“The state is also the most prostitution arrested in the United States, with the second-highest fast food restaurant, showing that both desire and gluttonous eaters have a hold,” the study says.

“Sadly, births with nefarious vices in Nevada have little room for altruism as it has the second lowest volunteer rate in the nation. The state also suffers from the second highest disconnected youth (young people who don't work or schools),” Wallethub added.

Meanwhile, California was placed second, as it had “third mass shooting and most elderly abuse complaints,” according to the report. The connection to Hollywood's vanity also contributed to the rankings.
“It is also the third highest rate of bullying in school property, and there is a huge number of assault arrests per capita,” the study found. “It is clear that the greatest sin of the residents involves anger and hatred.”
Florida ranked third for its prevalence of white colour crime in Sunshine State and its residents ranked on “sinful” internet searches.
“Greeding raises ugly heads in the state as it ranks second in terms of the number of complaints about identity theft and fraud,” Wallethub says. “With Florida having the fifth-highest number of mass shootings, violent crimes supported by anger and hatred are also a problem.”

“In addition, many Floridians show desire for online habits. Sunshine state residents rank fourth when searching Google for terms related to adultery, prostitution and porn,” the study added. “Florida is ranked highly for Google, which is related to vanity searching terms like liposuction and breast augmentation.”
Wallethub analyst Chip Lupo said that negative individual behavior “only affects a small number of people, but when these behaviors are shown by the high share of the state's population, the majority of the state's residents suffer as a result.”

“The state should invest in resources to help people control vices, such as robust rehabilitation programs for people with gambling and drug addicts,” Lupo suggested.
