New City data shows Big Apple dog owners are once again seeking inspiration from the sky that fell lightly when they were to name their pets.
The Monica from the Latin word “moon” was registered 591 times in five autonomous boroughs in 2024, data revealed.
New York City requires that all dogs be licensed by the Department of Health, which released the list.
According to the data, Bella, which was closed as the No. 1 pick in 2022, has been closely followed in second place, with 531 licenses registered.
However, the true winner may be debated. Last year, more than 2,600 licenses never had names in the documents.
Other popular names include “Milo, Coco, Max, Charlie and the popular Teddy, Laura, Rocky and Daisy, and there are “Dog Parks” around the dog park.
Many unique names are also listed, including 37 puppies named Onyx, 25 dubbed butter, and 19 of them are called Mr.
Oddly, the 26 dogs were named Shees Tsi in 2024. And yes, they were all Seas Turus.
Most of the Lunas were also Sea Turus, but the toy dog breed was just the second most popular breed of the year.
Yorkshire Terriers received the most dog licenses in 2024 when 2,498 people were issued to Yorkies.

However, dog ownership declined in 2024, with data showing the number of licenses falling 37% since 2023.
Last year, a total of 51,863 dogs were licensed.
The number of dog licenses issued annually has fluctuated since peaking during the pandemic as New Yorkers rushed to adopt furry friends to keep them and their company in quarantine.
Between 2016 and 2020, the Health Department received an average of 74,000 licenses each year.
When Covid-19 hit, the office handed out a whopping 108,312 registrations and an additional 92,559 the following year.
That number fell in 2022 – the same year that Luna took over the top name seed – to just 49,470, but in 2023 it rose to 83,220.
