Senate Democrats sent letters to the Trump administration, eager to support farmers financially as the tariff plans were implemented.
lettersigned by Agriculture Committee Sen. Amy Kulbucher (D-Minn.) and 14 other Democrat ranking members, addressed to US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Director Brooke Rollins.
“As we work to establish priorities for the coming weeks and months, we encourage farmers to move forward as quickly as possible to provide disaster relief,” the senator said.
President Trump's 25% tariff plan came into effect Tuesday, indicating a change in relations between neighboring countries. Experts warn Americans will be clashing with the next few days, especially when food prices are high.
The senators highlighted significant concern among farmers with tariffs: the use of fertilizers.
“Without providing timely economic and disaster aid, farmers are facing the prospect of reducing planting or liquidating assets and maintaining their business to head into a potentially challenging period of growth,” they said.
Earlier last month, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) urged Trump to exempt Cali from Canada's tariffs. Potassium is an important element of fertilizer and is the source of potassium, which plays an important role in crop growth and yield quality.
The senator asked the USDA to engage with farmers and facilitate the process ahead.
The senator said he looks forward to working with the Trump administration to ensure that American farmers are “successful.”
On Monday, just before Trump's tariffs came into effect, he noted the changes he was heading towards American farmers in an online post.
“To the great American farmers: Get ready to start making many produce for sale in the United States.” He posted. “The tariffs will be posted on external products on April 2nd. Enjoy!”
