Top NJ wrestler charged for role in tournament brawl

Star New Jersey High School wrestler Anthony Knox has been charged with simple assault or intentionally causing it after allegedly taking part in a bleaching brawl at a tournament last month. New York Post.

Knox and his father, Anthony Knox Sr., were taken into custody after the dissipation of the brawl at Collingswood High School. Knox Jr. has already won the match at St. John Vianney High School. This checked another keybox on his way to the expected four-game winning streak in New Jersey title in his weight class.

Court documents obtained through social media posts and videos reveal who claimed to be running through the bleachers to join a brawl at high school.

“Defendant entered the team's designated section opposite the gymnasium bleachers when he proceeded to punch during the District 25 wrestling tournament. [redacted] Repeatedly on the face and head, resulting in bruises and pain in the appropriate temple area,” the complaint document read.

Knox Jr. has given Mercer County Superior Court Judge Patrick Bartels a temporary restraining order from his ban on ban, allowing him to compete in the Regional 7 tournament from participation in the tournament by the New Jersey State University Inter-Government Athletic Association (NJSIAA).

Knox Jr. wins his match and competes for his fourth consecutive state title this weekend.

Knox Jr. issued a statement explaining why he joined the brawl. He said his father approached the opposing team to deal with alleged insults.

“During the final match, the crowd atmosphere became increasingly hostile to me and my teammates because of our success,” Knox Jr.'s statement read. “The insults were thrown at us. Apparently my father approached those throwing the insults at him and asked him to stop.

“In response, I saw these people assaulting my father, he was pulled down and completely surrounded by unruly people. My immediate response was to run near the section to help protect and safe my father and mother who were with me.

The Knox family also participated in an interview with ABC7. There, Knox Sr. stated that “racial slander” was being said to the children on the lower mat.

“[I] Former MMA fighter Knox Sr. said:

“As a man, I walked over, walked to the stands and asked the man to stop, and at that point I was attacked, I didn't throw any punches, I didn't hurt anyone.

The NJSIAA's first response was to disqualify Knox Jr., the top-ranked wrestler in the country's 126-pound weight class from the state tournament after reviewing video evidence online. Then, after Bartels' decision on the matter, the governing body said it would appeal the court's decision. “Superbly against it.”

Knox Jr. is about Cornell's commitment to having a “tough conversation” with future head coach Mike Gray, and what unfolded at Collingswood High School. Gray told NJ.com that Knox Jr.'s position with the university has not been affected by the incident and plans to put him on the roster every time he registers.

Knox Jr. beat Lacey High's Aidan Flynn to win seven Regional titles in the 126-pound weight class and become the state's fifth wrestler to win four straight New Jersey titles.
