Trump tells Americans to ‘bear’ with him on tariffs during Congress speech

President Trump addressed one of the elephants in the room in his speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.

The president acknowledged the economic impact of his tariffs and said Americans “have to endure” him throughout the “adjustment period.”

He also repeated to announce sweeping agricultural fees for it to come into effect on April 2nd.

“The tariffs will be placed on produce that will come to America and our farmers from April 2nd. That could be a bit of a adjustment period. We previously bought $50 billion when I signed a contract with China. And they did. They did.

“You'll probably have to endure with me again, and this would be even better.”

Overnight, the Trump administration imposed a sudden 25% tariff on board Mexico and Canada, bringing Canada's energy down a 10% percentage.

Trump has also doubled China's tariffs to 20%, targeting all three countries that have not done anything more to help the US counter the fentanyl crisis.

The 47th president was first threatening to file large tariffs on America's three biggest trading partners last November.

The tariffs were supposed to be in effect last month, but Trump chose to delay them, citing progress in negotiations with those three countries.

The tariffs affected annual imports worth around $1.5 trillion, with all three countries responding and announced retaliatory tariffs.

“Even if they are involved in us, we are involved in them. Whatever they tax us, we tax them,” Trump declared in his speech to Congress.

“If they place non-monetary tariffs to protect us from their markets, we put non-monetary barriers to protect them from our markets. We take in trillions of dollars and create jobs like we've never seen before.”

In his broad speech, Trump also promised “dramatic and immediate relief to working families” despite his recognition of the “period of adjustment” from his tariffs.

Democrats jeered in part of Trump's speech when he discussed economic policy.

Earlier in the day, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick argued that the president would “probably” reveal a deal with Canada and Mexico soon, by Wednesday.
