Navy Veteran’s Wife Speaks on Dark Past Amid Assault Charges

The wife of a Navy veteran, accused of violently attacking an elderly woman in the San Diego area, has shared her thoughts on her husband’s troubling history, indicating that she is planning to file for divorce. Brianna Butler, 32, revealed that her husband, Thomas Caleb Butler, also 32, had been violent towards family members and often mixed alcohol and drugs in a hazardous way.

Brianna recounted that Thomas had a history of mental health issues that contributed to his violent behavior. “It seemed best for us to be apart,” she mentioned, explaining that their separation had been ongoing for two years due to this aggression.

Thomas is currently facing charges of attempted murder after allegedly assaulting 69-year-old Kelly Sheron outside her home, which was adorned with numerous pro-Trump decorations and American flags. Mrs. Sheron stated that her husband has suffered critical injuries from the attack and is now on life support, with little hope for recovery.

A close acquaintance of the Butlers noted Thomas’s struggles with severe PTSD from his military service, mentioning his support for Donald Trump. Interestingly, Thomas’s voter registration has changed from Republican in New York to Democrat in San Diego by 2023, leading some to speculate about his political leanings.

Briana acknowledged having exchanged pleasantries with the Sherons in the past while walking their dogs, expressing confusion over Thomas’s sudden hostility. “He has never shown any aggression in our conversations,” she said. Despite seeking help for his PTSD from the Veterans Affairs Department, she felt that the treatment had not been effective.

Describing her husband as a “nerdy gamer” who enjoys video games and nerd culture, Brianna indicated that his demeanor worsened significantly after leaving military life. She has made it clear she intends to pursue a restraining order against him, believing that he must face legal consequences for his actions.

The incident has deeply shocked residents of Escondido, and local neighbors have expressed their dismay. “There’s simply no reason someone should face violence for expressing their beliefs,” one neighbor stated, while another described the incident as “heinous.” Complaints had previously been made about the Sheron home and its controversial displays.

Thomas Butler is set to appear in court for his arraignment, as the community continues to grapple with the implications of this violent act.
