Trudeau hoping to talk to Trump today after calling tariffs ‘very dumb’: report

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hopes to speak to President Donald Trump today after calling his tariffs “very stupid,” the report said.

A senior Canadian official told The Associated Press that Trudeau had told the Canadian Prime Minister yesterday he wanted to talk to Trump on Wednesday.

The conversation takes place after Trudeau denounces his country for Trump's new 25% tariffs and vows that “we will not step back from the fight.”

“I want to talk directly with certain Americans. Donald, over the eight years you and I worked together, we've done a lot of stuff,” Trudeau said at a press conference Tuesday. “And now we should work together to ensure even greater prosperity for North Americans in a very uncertain and challenging world. Now it's not my habit to agree to the Wall Street Journal. But Donald says you're a very clever person, and this is very stupid.

Trudeau announced a 25% retaliation tariff on American goods in response to Trump's tariffs that came into effect yesterday morning.

Trump said, following Trudeau's remarks on Tuesday, “If he places a retaliation fee on the United States, our mutual tariffs will soon increase as well!”

Trudeau added at a press conference that he was “always there” to talk to Trump.

“The facts are very clear that we are doing everything necessary in terms of our actions against fentanyl, and because not only the US, but ourselves and Canadians are suffering from the tragedy, which is illegal fentanyl,” he said.

Lutonic says Trump's tariffs with Canada and Mexico will likely end with a mid-term meeting.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutonic has presented a possible agreement between the Trump administration and the leaders of Canada and Mexico.

When it appeared on Fox Business's “Kudlow” on Tuesday, Lutnick told host Larry Kudlow that Trump was created to create more equitable trade between nations, focusing on American neighbors.

“He's really looking carefully to see if there's a way out there that can come in the middle where you can give Canadians and Mexicans something, but they have to do more,” he told Kudlow. “They have to end the death of fentanyl. You can't say it's okay if people can die. That's not just about anything.”

“There's no pause. There's nothing to pause. But I think he'll figure out more. You'll do more. “We're probably going to announce tomorrow, so somewhere in the middle will probably have the result.
