The Trump administration has allowed a month of sculpture on tariffs on Canada and Mexico for carmakers, White House press chief Karoline Leavitt announced Wednesday.
“We spoke to three big car dealers. Levitt said after reading a statement from President Trump.
“The duties on recipes will still come into effect on April 2, but at the request of businesses related to the USCMA, the president has been exempt from them for a month, so they will not pose any economic disadvantage,” she further explained.
The exemptions apply to Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co. and Stellantis NV follow Trump's meetings with carmaker executives.
On Tuesday, the Trump administration implemented a full 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico after not paying attention to his ultimatum calling for reforms to combat the fentanyl crisis.
Both countries are issuing retaliatory tariffs. Trump also revealed that he had spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“For those interested, I told Canadian Gov. Justin Trudeau that his weak border policy has caused primarily the problems we are facing.
“These policies are responsible for the deaths of many people!”
