Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) refused Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, D., on Wednesday to refuse to comply with the federal immigration officials' detainee requests.
During a council oversight hearing on sanctuary policies, Jordan blows up the mayor in a preventable, violent clash between gang members and immigrants and customs enforcement agents.
“The police were assaulted because of your policy.”
New York Mayor Eric Adams (D), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D) were also on the hot seat Wednesday.
Jordan opened the comment by asking Johnston about Abraham Gonzalez, a Venezuelan gang member who was released from prison on Friday.
Lawmakers explained that Gonzalez was charged with aggravated assault, car theft and felony threats. Despite the requests of ICE detainees, Gonzalez was released on Denver Street.
ICE had requested 48 hours of notification for Gonzalez's release. However, according to Jordan, Denver law enforcement officials provided an hourly notice to federal immigration agencies.
Johnston claimed in this example that 1,200 other 1,200 people cooperated with Ice's detainee request by notifying the agency about the scheduled release of Denver. However, he did not deny Jordan's claim that the ice had been given an hour's notice.
“We notified them of the release. There were six ice agents present when he was released, so they had enough time to respond and be present,” Johnston said.
Jordan explained that the gang suspect was not handed over to ice inside the prison. Instead, he was released on the street outside the prison, where several ice agents were waiting for him to arrest him in the parking lot.
“What do you think happened in the parking lot?” Jordan asked. “Is one of the ice officers assaulted?
Jordan also noted that if the relocation was completed in the safety of the prison, only two ice officers were needed to hand over the individual to federal custody.
“Do you know why you don't?” Jordan asked Johnston. “Because you are a sanctuary city.”
Johnston continued to deny Denver protecting illegal aliens from law enforcement officials. The mayor claimed that since the argument he had contacted ICE and released him to “adjust the strategy.”
“The police were assaulted because of your policy,” Jordan said.
John Fabricatore, retired Ice Field Office Director, commented on Johnston. post In X, the mayor states that he “doesn't care about citizen safety.”
“He cares more about illegal aliens and gang members. American citizens should come first,” he added.
Tuesday, Fabbricatore spoke Before the cybersecurity, information technology and government innovation of the Observation Committee Subcommittee. During the hearing, he detailed how Colorado Sanctuary policies could “limit cooperation” with ice, including restrictions on the Department of Motor Vehicles and state labor records.
